I’ve been doing WCW organizing at Sarah Lawrence College since the
beginning of the year, with minimal response from the student body.
However after November 2nd our core expanded from 3 to 10 very
enthusiastic people that have come regularly to the past three meetings
and taken major initiative in launching this movement at Sarah
Lawrence. There presence has made all the difference. In the last
meeting some of the new members spoke to what made them come forward
after November 2nd.
One woman said that the youth meeting following the Nov. 2nd actions in
NYC inspired her to get behind this movement. “Seeing all these people
that have sacrificed so much to drive out the bush regime really
inspired me. There is so much shit beyond protest, there is shit going
on all the time and I wanted to be a part of it. I realized that things
don’t stop after a protest.”
Another woman spoke very bluntly and said, “I’m a socialist, and this is exactly what I have been looking for”.
One man said that he was polarized by the amount of energy his friends
had against the WCW movement and he wants to create an atmosphere on
this campus where progressives against WCW are put on the defensive.
“We need more of a group mentality that upholds the World Can’t Wait,
instead of the group mentality around now that is against it for really
no good reason.”
A lot of progress is being made from these youth newly coming forward and we have put the following plans into action:
– Sending 3 reps to the national conference
– We need to have Sarah Lawrence rep at more WCW NYC meetings, to help
keep the struggle in perspective and be learning from other group’s
experiences.
– Large posters are being made (tonight) by a couple students to point
to the horror of the bush administration (casualties, torture victims,
coat hangers).
– One student has officially (with support of the teacher) made their
year long project for their silk screening class WCW and plans to make
t-shirts, patches, and posters all contributing to driving out the Bush
Regime
– There has been a committee to set up a Drive Out The Bush Regime open mic
– We have applied to be an official campus club and asked the school for 1500 dollars of funding.
– We are collaborating with a feminist organization on campus that puts
out a lot of zines, and putting together a zine on why the bush regime
must be driven out. It will include articles from the website, the
call, and poetry, art and essays from Sarah Lawrence students.
I’m pretty fucking excited.
