Remarks to Chicago November 2nd Rally:
I’ve suffered many disappointments by Presidential administrations over
the years, but never so many dangerous and outrageous disappointments
as during this Bush Administration. One of many reasons to oust this
Bush administration as soon as we can is its failure to protect our
environment.
For just one example, take the Bush plan to weaken regulation of air
pollution with the so-called ‘Clear Skies Initiative, ‘ which would
more accurately be named the Deadlier Skies Initiative. (It has also
been called the Clear Lies Initiative.) If the so-called Clear Skies
Initiative were to become law, 4,000 more lives would be cut short
every year, compared with enforcing current law — 4,000 preventable,
premature deaths.
Whole books have been written on what the Bush administration has
already done to our environment. One such book, titled Bush Versus the
Environment, is endorsed by Martha Marks, president of Republicans for
Environmental Protection. Even the Chicago Tribune, which endorsed
George W. Bush, wrote earlier that the best word to describe the Bush
administration’s record on clean air was ‘dismal.’
The nonpartisan League of Conservation Voters has been grading our
elected officials on their environmental record for over thirty years.
George W. Bush is the first president ever to get an F for failure. And
according to the Sierra Club, the Bush environmental record is the
worst in U.S. history.
We cannot afford to entrust power over our air, our water, our health
and our environment to an administration that is a dismal failure. The
longer this administration stays in power, the more people will
needlessly suffer and die.
Rosa Parks showed us what peaceful people power can do. We need to expel this failed Bush administration now.
