An inspiring letter from a High School Student on Long Island that exemplifies
the determination of High School students around the country on Nov.2nd and beyond.
– “When the pledge of allegiance came on we all put our hats back on and sat on the
floor. Teachers and students around us stared and when the pledge was
finished we stood up and walked right out the doors. “-excerpt from letter
Hello, my name is S and I am a junior at a High School on Long
Island. Myself and a group of my friends organized a school walkout on
Nov. 2nd.
A few weeks before a friend of mine had mentioned
that a couple of kids where going to walk out of school for an
anti-bush protest. On Oct. 31 my friends had told me the official date
of the walk out would be that Wednesday Nov. 2. That day i
went home and did a little research and found worldcantwait.org. I sent
the link to some friends who began printing thinks out
and posting them up in the school.
At this point i had
started telling people about the walk out and saying that it
would take place after the pledge of allegiance was said and that
everyone would walk out and meet at the flag pole. The day of Nov. 2nd
at about 8:55 am I was in my second period class and the morning
announcements had just started. When the pledge came on we all put our
hats back on and sat on the floor. Teachers and students around us
stared and when the pledge was finished we stood up and walked right
out the doors.
We were the first to leave the building and
there was security ready waiting for us. He had told us that we would
be the only ones to leave and that we had a choice to go back inside
and if we didn’t we would have to face severe consequences. I had told
him “I have already made my choice”. About 70 kids walked out some left
in cars holding down there horns as they passed us on the street as we
walked to the train station to head to the city for the rally. Later on
that day we heard that some people had been suspended anywhere from 3-5
days if they didn’t return to school.
I went to a NYC Youth & Students meeting in Washington Square Park
today, Saturday Nov 5th. After this meeting I have decided to take
action in a bigger way at my high school. On monday I plan on starting
an authorized club at school. If I can’t get the administration to
sponsor it then it will be a unauthorized club, but the club will be
created regardless. I was wondering if there were an outlet for me to
express and receive ideas about events and actions that could be taken
to help this righteous cause. My time is dedicated to this cause
and helping it in any way possible. So if you could message me back
with any tips or anything that I could utilize to help spread the word
and inform people of what is really going on in this country, it would
be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
