On the withdrawal of Harriet Miers’ nomination to the Supreme Court:
While
Harriet Miers is no champion of the fundamental rights of the people,
the withdrawal of her nomination is extremely ominous.
Simply
put, Miers was forced to step down because the hardcore base of the
bush regime demands an even more aggressive, rapid, and openly fascist
remaking of society. Faced with mounting difficulties, bush has
signaled that he will now move even more quickly and forcefully in this
direction.
The Miers withdrawal drives home the urgent need for people to be in the streets Nov. 2nd,
the anniversary of Bush’s re-election, raising the slogan ‘Drive Out
the Bush Regime.’ Silence and paralysis are NOT acceptable. Unless
people mount a decisive challenge to this whole direction ( NOW ( we
will find ourselves in a far worse position once the dust clear on this nomination.
At the same time, the fact that people do not want this fascist overhaul of society underlines the real
possibility to drive out the bush regime, repudiate his political
program, and reverse the whole direction he has been taking society.
This can only happen through the mobilization of millions of people who
know in their hearts that in fact they must, and are coming to see that
they can, change the course of history through their own independent
historical action.
November 2nd it begins.
