Midwest "Break Free from Fossil Fuels" Protesters Rally Against BP Refinery

Members of World Can't Wait Chicago joined impassioned groups and individuals from across the Midwest at the BP Refinery in Whiting, Indiana on May 15 to say no to fossil fuels. This was one of dozens of coordinated actions around the world (more here). After a rally that drew about 750 people, we joined a march and walked for over a mile past enormous oil tanks, railroad tracks used by trains transporting huge quantities of oil and tall smokestacks some emitting flames.

Joy swept through our cell block, Jamesville County Jail, Pod 4, Thursday, January 28.
That evening some of the fifty-nine women in our Pod rushed up and knocked on my cell door. They reported the six o’clock news had shown twelve drone resisters handcuffed, sitting on a roadside curb, waiting to be taken into custody.

DeWitt, NY, Jan 19 Following a 1/2 hour press conference, Mary Anne Grady Flores, a mother, grandmother and daughter, proprietor of a small Latino catering business, was sentenced to 6 months in jail, then handcuffed and taken from the courtroom to Jamesville Correctional Facility in East Syracuse.

Protesters across the U.S. and at U.S. embassies in London and Mexico City last week demanded the closure of the U.S. torture camp at Guantánamo Bay first set up by the Bush regime on January 11, 2002. The camp has operated seven years under Obama, as long as it did under Bush, though Obama promised in 2009 to close it within a year. Guantánamo forms part of a larger, global network of prisons set up by the United States after 9/11, an integral part of the limitless global “war on terror” necessary to spread the U.S. empire of capitalist-imperialist globalization exploiting billions worldwide.
