Barack Obama is selling the planned US bombing of Syria as a “humanitarian” act in response to a chemical weapons attack on civilians.
Bombing Syria will kill more civilians and invite even more intervention and weapons into the country, making it more likely that the civil war could expand into an extremely dangerous regional conflagration.
Moreover, launching an attack on a country that isn’t threatening yours is the supreme international war crime.
The bloody civil war – where big powers are funding both sides – has killed 100,000 Syrians. Atrocities were committed by both the government and the mixed opposition of pro-Western and Islamic Fundamentalists. Neither offers a future for 23 million Syrians, who include refugees from U.S. and Israeli wars on Iraq and Palestine.
People in the U.S. suspect this attack could be a worse disaster than the Bush regime brought to Iraq and Afghanistan.
With both the UN and Britain refusing to back the strike, Obama is seeking Congressional approval, but has not promised he would be bound by its vote. Even if Congress votes “yes,” this war of aggression will not be just or legal.
Congress will not speak for us. This war can be stopped. We have to get visibly into the streets in determined protest to do it.
No war crimes in our name! Humanity and the planet come first!
