A big problem many people who oppose the Bush Regime’s onslaught on the world and its people have is that they don’t listen closely enough to what Bush and Co. are actually saying. Bush is telling us what he plans to do. He plans to escalate the war in Iraq, he is threatening Iran with imminent attacks that could have a cataclysmic impact on the world, and he has declared his intention to have U.S. force stay in Iraq for a “long term relationship”. If the Bush Regime is able to carry through with these monstrous plans, if there aren’t outpourings throughout this country demanding an immediate end to the war in Iraq and no war upon Iran, the consequences will be severe, horrible for the people in the entire world and especially the Mid-East, and be felt for decades.
On August 28, 2007 Bush delivered a major speech before the American Legion in which he said all the above. Bush began his speech with a “big lie” when he stated, “We always enter wars reluctantly”” This from a president that launched two major wars since he took office and threatens to launch a third soon if his regime continues in power.
But he told the truth a little later in the speech when he said, “America has enduring and vital interests in the [Middle East] region”It remains a strategic crossroads for the world”” For the U.S. imperialists, control of this region is necessary to dominate the rest of the world. And Bush emphasized that his regime is intent on remaining in Iraq and also eliminating Iran as a threat to U.S. domination.
Bush said, “I want our fellow citizens to consider what would happen if these forces of radicalism and extremism are allowed to drive us out of the Middle East”The region would be dramatically transformed in a way that could imperil the civilized world. Extremists of all strains would be emboldened by the knowledge that they forced America to retreat”Iran could conclude that we were weak — and could not stop them from gaining nuclear weapons. And once Iran had nuclear weapons, it would set off a nuclear arms race in the region.” The possibility that Iran may eventually acquire nuclear weapons is one of the central “justifications” that the Bush regime has been using for threatening Iran and is similar to the justification of war with Iraq.
What kind of system is it that has “vital interests” half way around the world? The “vital interests” of the great majority of people in this country are emphatically not the same as Bush & Co.’s. Our interests are in driving out this criminal regime that has already committed monstrous crimes against humanity and, through Bush, is announcing its intention to extend and deepen those crimes. And doing so would in fact be a great benefit to all of humanity.
Bush continued, “Extremists would control a key part of the world’s energy supply, could blackmail and sabotage the global economy.” What Bush did not say is that he wants the U.S. to continue to “control a key part of the world’s energy supply” by dominating this region, now and well into the future. And in this, he has complete agreement with all other members of the political leadership of this country, Republican and Democrat alike.
Islamic fundamentalism is one of the forces challenging U.S. hegemony in Central Asia and the mid-east. And yes, fanatics like Osama bin Laden do seek to transform the Middle East to suit their own reactionary purposes. But it is the Bush regime that is also trying to transform the region into an area completely under the thumb of the U.S.
Bush emphasized this in his speech – “Iran’s actions threaten the security of nations everywhere. And that is why the United States is rallying friends and allies around the world to isolate the regime, to impose economic sanctions. We will confront this danger before it is too late.” This last sentence should be taken very seriously. The Bush regime is determined to deal with Iran before it leaves office in January 2009. Keep in mind that the Bush regime has refused to eliminate any options in regard to Iran, including the use of nuclear weapons. The administration also keeps a minimum of two nuclear carrier battle groups nearby Iranian coastal waters.
Bush continued, “For the sake of our own security, we’ll pursue our enemies, we’ll persevere and we will prevail” Late in the speech he said, “We seek an Iran whose government is accountable to its people — instead of to leaders who promote terror and pursue the technology that could be used to develop nuclear weapons”Shia extremists, backed by Iran, are training Iraqis to carry out attacks on our forces and the Iraqi people. Members of the Qods Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are supplying extremist groups with funding and weapons, including sophisticated IEDs. And with the assistance of Hezbollah, they’ve provided training for these violent forces inside of Iraq. Recently, coalition forces seized 240-millimeter rockets that had been manufactured in Iran this year and that had been provided to Iraqi extremist groups by Iranian agents. The attacks on our bases and our troops by Iranian-supplied munitions have increased in the last few months — despite pledges by Iran to help stabilize the security situation in Iraq.”
“Some say Iran’s leaders are not aware of what members of their own regime are doing. Others say Iran’s leaders are actively seeking to provoke the West. Either way, they cannot escape responsibility for aiding attacks against coalition forces and the murder of innocent Iraqis. The Iranian regime must halt these actions. And until it does, I will take actions necessary to protect our troops. I have authorized our military commanders in Iraq to confront Tehran’s murderous activities.”
Once again, pay attention to what Bush is telling us. He has accused Iran of “murder”. He is setting in motion the U.S. military to confront Iran. He is saying he will “pursue, persevere, and prevail” in his utterly unjust and criminal war of imperial conquest. In short, he is announcing to the world his intention to take the fight to Iran. The question confronting us all is, what are we going to do about it? Nothing short of massive political resistance and opposition that shatters the suffocating “normalcy” that prevails in this country now will prevent Bush from extending the existing wars to include Iran sooner or later, and the odds on sooner are very good.
Bush also made sure no one in the audience would think that he intends to pull out of Iraq. “The future course of the Middle East will turn heavily on the outcome of the fight in Iraq. Iraq is at the heart of the Middle East”America will not abandon Iraq in its hour of need. It’s a noble cause. It is a just cause. It is a necessary cause…And that is why we’re in this fight. And that’s why we’ll stay in the fight, and that is why we’re going to win this fight.”
So, now we know what they intend to do. The question is, what are we going to do? URGENTLY NEEDED – AN UPSURGE OF ORANGE! THE WORLD Can’t WAIT. DRIVE OUT THE BUSH REGIME!
