3/7/07: In his 2003 State of the Union address,
President Bush said “The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein
recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.
Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength
aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production.”
This blatant lie became one of the foremost
strands in the fabric of deceit, lies, disinformation, and manipulation woven
by the war criminals of the Bush Regime – Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell,
and the rest – that became and remains much of the justification for the war of
raw conquest the U.S. has unleashed upon Iraq.

Now Lewis Libby – once chief of staff for
Vice President Dick Cheney, and whose role in the Bush administration has been described
as being “Cheney’s Cheney” – has been convicted of obstructing justice, and
lying to a grand jury and to FBI investigators about leaking information that
attacked the credibility of some people who exposed the lie about the Iraqi
purchase of uranium, which, in fact, never happened.
In a Mafia movie, Libby would be the fall
guy, the patsy, the stooge who has to fall on his sword to protect the capos. But the piles of dead and mangled
and tortured bodies in Iraq
are all too real. The endless, savage, and escalating warfare and torture
institutionalized by the Bush Regime continues. Libby’s conviction is one more
indication of the fierce infighting going on among the political leadership of
this country about how they should proceed with the unjust, immoral, and
illegal wars the Bush Regime has initiated. But in no way does the trial or
conviction of Lewis Libby even come close to addressing the real questions and
concerns confronting the millions of
people in this country, and the many millions more across this planet who want
to stop the current wars, now, and who are determined to prevent further wars –
based on similar deceit – from starting.
There is no question that the Bush
administration has committed crimes it could be impeached and/or put on trial
for (including the very crimes Libby was just convicted of). But for this to happen will require a massive
upsurge of resistance from the people in the United States demanding it. Moreover, in a situation with intense
political infighting in the halls of power, such resistance has even more
potential to impact and transform the whole situation. So the question is, what are you going to do
about it?
