Why should you spend Saturday March
17 marching on the Pentagon?
YOUR GOVERNMENT, on the basis of
outrageous lies, is waging a murderous and utterly illegitimate war in Iraq, with
other countries in their sights.
4 years
have passed since the start of this unjust war; 655,000 Iraqis lay dead, and
Bush’s escalation, now in effect, is widening the horror. The Bush regime is poised to launch an attack
on Iran, which could well
inflame the entire Middle East with
devastating global consequences.
What we do now can
make all the difference. This whole global conquest for
empire and the war crimes being committed in our names must be stopped.
Waiting for
a savior from the Democratic Party in the ’08 elections is distracting and
demobilizing. Worse, too many are
squandering hopes and energies in what has become a permanent election
season. Every major, “electable”
Democratic presidential candidate has advocated going after Iran, keeping
all, including nuclear, options “on the table.”
Each of them preaches finding common ground with the fascists and
religious fanatics that dominate US politics.
We must not allow the political agenda that these Democratic Party leaders
deem possible, and/or desirable, to set the limits on what we think, demand,
and do.
2007 must
not be characterized by passivity and acceptance of each new outrage committed
by Bush, but instead must be the year in which millions decide that enough is
enough, and set out to change the course of history. Just as progressive change has been fought
for and won in the past – from the Civil Rights movement to the anti-Vietnam
war movement – today we must do the same, and all the more urgently.
If Bush is
not removed from office and his program repudiated, not only will the death and
destruction in the Middle East continue for two more years, but everything Bush
has done – torture, evisceration of habeas corpus, secret spying, a doctrine of
pre-emptive war, moves toward theocracy – will be legitimated and
continue.
The March on the Pentagon will:

Demand the removal of the Bush regime now. 2008 is too late!

Demand an end to the war on Iraq now and no new war on Iran.

Send a message to the people of the world, who cannot see our
anti-war bumper stickers, or feel our individual outrage, that people in the United States are refusing to go along with Bush’s unjust wars.

Marching
together, visible to millions, we can unlock the growing ferment on the
campuses, among the military veterans, bringing into motion a new dynamic.
So buy your
ticket, clear your schedule, do whatever you can to be in Washington on March 17, and bring others,
marching across the bridge with a huge and determined crowd towards the
Pentagon. In 1967, such a march began to
turn the public against the Vietnam War.
Now, the stakes are much higher.

The Call of The World Can’t
Wait states the following: “That which you will not resist and mobilize to
stop, you will learn – or be forced to accept.”
Well, I refuse to accept a
government that wages wars of aggression based on outrageous lies.
I refuse to accept a
government that tortures and justifies the use of torture.
I refuse to accept a
government has repealed habeas corpus.
And, I refuse to accept the
admonition of some that I should seek “common ground” with those who support
these evils.
No! All of this must be
resisted and those of us who understand the necessity of resistance have an
obligation to lead by example and carry the message to the entire nation and
world beyond. That is why we need to be in Washington on March 17, so we can nail our message
on the door of the headquarters of American militarism, the Pentagon.
Many Americans who are
angered and shamed by the crimes being committed in our name may still feel inhibited
from doing all they can to resist because the forces arrayed against us,
including the apathy of fellow citizens, are great. Or they may even be kidding
themselves that the pressure is off now because the Democrats have control of
Congress and the Bush regime will soon be out of office. But now there are more troops in Iraq and a greater U.S. Naval/Air presence in
the Persian Gulf than there was on the day the
Democrats won the 2006 election.
“Our government” has apparently not gotten the message we tried to deliver last November.
Maybe it’s time to start talking louder. See you in Washington on the 17th.
